Founded by longtime esthetician Justine Kahn after eight years of working in spas and realizing she couldn’t do all she wanted for her clients’ skin with the ingredients and products available to her – not to mention she noticed that not only were these ingredients not helping to heal, but they were actually causing damage with synthetic fragrances, alcohols, and questionable preservatives – she began her mission to help people understand that our skin IS our body. What we put on it will eventually be working its way through our entire system. This motivated her to figure out which ingredients positively impact the skin.
While training in cosmetic chemistry at the Nova Studio in Richmond, CA, Justine became very clear on this: simple skincare is more effective and healthy. And in December of 2010, with deep motivation to create something that would truly serve each individual’s needs and desires, she opened Skin Remedy, a luxury spa in San Francisco, CA. Using her new energy and excitement from all that she had learned, she designed the business to be able to customize each client’s experience in the treatment room. This is when she began to develop her signature collection of powerful, raw ingredients that she would use to formulate the perfect remedy for each person’s skin.
Six years later, Justine expanded on what she had been developing and using in the treatment room. Teaming up with an incredible plant biologist to help ensure each product and service they offered was using plants to their nutritional maximum, they were able to create a complete line of science-based, truly organic skin: Botnia.
And to ensure the Botnia team has access to the most potent and fresh botanicals, they grow and care for their own plants on their microfarm at Botnia HQ and take them right into their own green laboratory on-site in Sausalito, California to keep the supply chain simple and transparent, reduce fossil fuels, and create incredibly effective products with in-house infusion, macerations, extracts, and hydrosols. And if they're not able to grow it, they source as locally as possible and look for the same organic farming practices they use on their farm.
They think about every aspect of the product creation process: starting with organic soil and seed quality through growing to harvest, drying, and finally processing each botanical in their own lab. Botnia’s farm follows the natural cycle of their climate, and they employ water catchment and eco-farming practices. The Botnia farm is protected from any pesticides and their pest control consists of neem, ladybugs, and their farm cat Aleister. They utilize organic soil, fertilized with homemade compost - mainly of leaves and vegetable scraps - into a rich soil amendment that keeps their plants thriving from the moment they are planted to the time they harvest them.
As conscious stewards of Mother Earth, they take responsibility for every step of their process and question how it can be less of a burden on the planet. Their goal is that their little organic farm nurtures a holistic relationship between the soil, plants, and waterways, which in turn creates a more sustainable earth.
